Overview

La Leche League International (LLLI) is a non-governmental, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and supporting breastfeeding worldwide. The organization was founded in 1956 by Marian Thompson, Mary White, Mary Ann Cahill, Edwina Froehlich, Mary Ann Kerwin, Viola Lennon, and Betty Wagner in Franklin Park, Illinois, USA[2].

Mission and Purpose

The mission of LLLI is to help mothers worldwide to breastfeed through mother-to-mother support, encouragement, information, and education, and to promote a better understanding of breastfeeding as an important element in the healthy development of the baby and mother[2][3]. LLLI aims to provide advocacy, education, and training related to breastfeeding, fostering a culture that values motherhood and nursing.

History

La Leche League began as a local organization and grew to become an international entity. The first formal meeting was held on October 17, 1956, in Illinois. In 1964, the organization became known as La Leche League International, Inc., with groups established in Canada, Mexico, and New Zealand[2]. The name "La Leche" is derived from the Spanish word leche, meaning "milk," inspired by a shrine dedicated to "Nuestra Señora de la Leche y Buen Parto" (Our Lady of Happy Delivery and Plentiful Milk) in St. Augustine, Florida[2].

International Presence

LLLI operates in about 89 countries, promoting breastfeeding and recognizing its importance in various social cultures[2]. The organization has made significant efforts to improve diversity and equality to be more accessible to all who seek breastfeeding support.

Events and Recognition

In 1981, LLLI was granted consultative status with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). In 1985, LLLI was involved in the establishment of the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners to develop a certification program for lactation consultants[2].

La Leche League USA

La Leche League USA (LLL USA) is an independent organization that emerged from La Leche League International after an internal reorganization in 2009[2]. LLL USA focuses on supporting breastfeeding, chestfeeding, and human milk feeding in the United States through parent-to-parent support, encouraging diversity and inclusion among its members[1].
