Overview

KOWS Community Radio is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in Western Sonoma County, California. The organization operates KOWS-LP, a low-power FM radio station broadcasting on the frequency 92.5 FM. As a community radio, it is led by a Board of Directors and relies on a group of dedicated volunteers to manage its day-to-day operations.

History

KOWS-LP was first assigned its call letters by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on September 22, 2005. Initially, the station broadcast from Howard's Café in Occidental, California. Over time, its studios have relocated several times, eventually settling in downtown Santa Rosa in 2019. The radio station initially operated on 107.3 FM but switched to 92.5 FM in May 2017.

Broadcasting

KOWS Community Radio offers a diverse range of programming, including music genres like Americana, ska, jazz, and blues, as well as public affairs and discussion shows. The station provides 24/7 broadcasting both on FM and through online streaming platforms. Key shows include Blue Moon Americana, Project Censored, This is Ska, News With No Agenda, and Democracy Now. The station's eclectic programming reflects the diverse tastes and interests of its Northern California community.

Organizational Structure

The radio is supported by listener donations, business underwriting, host contributions, and grants. All funds raised are directly used for studio operations, equipment, and licensing costs. KOWS prides itself on its community-driven approach, with a team of over 100 volunteers contributing their time and talents to ensure the station remains vibrant and relevant.
