Little League Baseball Inc.
Little League Baseball Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is the premier youth sports program in the world, dedicated to fostering character development through baseball and softball. Founded in 1939 by Carl E. Stotz in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, it aims to promote discipline, teamwork, courage, loyalty, and good character among young participants.
History
In the summer of 1938, Carl Stotz began experimenting with the concept by organizing informal games with his nephews and their friends. This experiment evolved into the first organized league in 1939, featuring three teams sponsored by local businesses: Jumbo Pretzel, Lycoming Dairy, and Lundy Lumber Company. By 1947, the first league outside of Pennsylvania was established in New Jersey, marking a significant milestone in the organization's expansion. Today, Little League has grown to operate in over 80 countries with millions of participants.
Structure and Programs
Little League is structured into local, district, regional, and international levels. Local leagues are autonomous but operate under the broader guidelines of Little League International. They offer various divisions for children aged 4-16, including tee-ball, minor leagues, Little Leagues, Junior Leagues, Senior Leagues, and Big Leagues. In addition to baseball, Little League offers softball programs for boys and girls, ensuring inclusivity and diversity.
Mission and Impact
The organization's mission is to develop better citizens rather than superior athletes. It emphasizes character development through sports participation, ensuring each child plays in every game. Little League also provides resources and training programs for volunteers and offers grants to support local leagues. Its operations are headquartered in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania, with a significant presence globally.
Awards and Recognition
Little League has received numerous awards and recognitions for its contributions to youth sports. It holds a congressional charter under Title 36 of the United States Code, reflecting its impact on American society and international communities. The organization annually hosts the Little League World Series, a prestigious tournament that attracts teams from around the world.
External Recognition
- Federal Charter: Given its impact, Little League Baseball was awarded a federal charter by the U.S. Congress, recognizing its contributions to youth development.
- International Presence: With operations in more than 80 countries, Little League has become a global leader in youth sports development.
