ACLU Maryland staff members spent the day in our nation's capital during Community Safety Week meeting with key legislators and advocating for legislation like the Mental Health Justice Act which aims to redirect 911 calls involving mental health crises to trained mental health professionals instead of law enforcement, as well as the Driving for Opportunity Act - a bipartisan bill that provides grants to states that do not suspend, revoke, or refuse to renew a driver’s license of a person or registration of a motor vehicle for failure to pay a civil or criminal fine or fee. These bills are a common-sense public safety measure that will help end debt-imposed cycles of poverty and incarceration and ensure law enforcement are focused on actual public safety issues. #CommunitySafetyWeek.
