Puget Sound Zen Center
Overview
The Puget Sound Zen Center (PSZC) is a US-based nonprofit organization dedicated to the practice and study of Zen Buddhism. It was founded in 2003 by Abbot Koshin Christopher Cain and his wife, Soshin Lidunn Cain, on Vashon Island, Washington.
History
Initially, the center operated with a single weekly service in a loft above an orthodontist's office. As interest grew, it moved through several locations, including an artist studio and a shared space with the local Jewish community. Over the years, the center expanded its services to include daily morning and evening meditation sessions, Qigong classes, dharma study series, and discussion groups on topics such as racial justice and end-of-life issues[2][4].
Practices and Programs
The center primarily follows the Rinzai Zen tradition and offers a variety of programs and activities. These include sitting meditation (zazen), walking meditation (kinhin), chanting, and dharma talks. The organization supports community outreach and interfaith initiatives, fostering unity among diverse spiritual groups[1][2].
One notable program is the Waking to Living and Dying initiative, which encourages community discussion about the end of life. This aligns with the Zen tradition's emphasis on contemplation of life and death[1][2].
Locations and Facilities
After an extensive search, the center purchased a building that formerly housed a funeral home chapel, allowing them to establish a permanent meditation hall. This new location serves both as a Zen center and occasionally as a chapel for memorial services[2]. Prior to this acquisition, the center had also purchased a plot of land with plans to build a zendo and gardens for meditation trails[4].
Mission
The PSZC aims to provide a welcoming and nourishing community for those interested in the study and practice of Zen Buddhism. It encourages interfaith collaboration and supports various community initiatives, fostering a sense of unity and belonging among members[1].
