We are joined together by a shared passion for youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. www.SaginawYMCA.org For nearly 150 years, the YMCA of Saginaw has been a leader in providing opportunities for youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility in the Great Lakes Bay Region of Michigan. Our 95,000 square foot facility in the heart of Celebration Square exists to provide hope, promote health and perpetuate change in Saginaw, Michigan. Our community is both racially and ethnically diverse with wide-ranging socioeconomics. Nearly 13% of families live below the poverty line, including 24% of those under the age of 18. Unfortunately, our community also faces other difficulties to living well, including a prevalence of obesity. In Saginaw, the rate of obese, low-income preschool children is 20%, which is 10% higher than the state average. Likewise, the obesity rate in our middle schools was last recorded as 15%. Recent years have also shown an increase in overweight high school students from 11.6% to 14.2% in 2012. The Y doesn't see these facts as obstacles though; we view them as opportunities. We believe children and adults need every opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive. By providing a positive, safe environment that encourages growth through fun, healthy activities, we can strengthen our community one person at a time. Y staff and volunteers deliver on our cause to strengthen Saginaw daily. Whether building confidence in kids, encouraging someone to achieve a health goal, or bring people from different backgrounds together to improve local neighborhoods, every connection made contributes to a better "us." Working together for good is just who we are: An association of people united in a common effort to put Judeo-Christian principles and core values into practice through programs that enrich the spirit, mind and body for all.
