WCF-Liberia Country Director Dr. Annika Hillers meets the Liberian President to discuss conservation projects in Liberia On 21st of May 2025, Dr. Hillers was invited to meet with the Liberian President, His Excellency, Joseph N. Boakai Sr. and the Superintendent of Sinoe County, Honourable Peter Wleh Nyensuah, to share first hand information about the situation at Sapo National Park, other protected areas in Liberia, and the conservation sector in Liberia in general. The meeting is a significant move towards environmental protection in Liberia, because the meeting focused on the growing threats of illegal mining and unauthorized human occupation within the park’s boundaries—issues that continue to jeopardize the ecological integrity of one of Liberia’s most critical biodiversity hotspots, home to critically endangered western chimpanzees and other endangered wildlife. The discussion was productive and focused on the need for immediate and concrete legal actions to protect this vital natural heritage for future generations. The meeting is seen as a promising step in the national effort to strengthen conservation laws and enforcement in protected areas across Liberia.
