History

Mary Baldwin University, previously known as Mary Baldwin College, was founded in 1842 as Augusta Female Seminary by Rufus William Bailey. It is the oldest institution of higher education for women in the nation affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA). The school was renamed Mary Baldwin Seminary in 1895 in honor of Mary Julia Baldwin, who served as its principal from 1863. It became a four-year institution and was renamed Mary Baldwin College in 1923. In 2016, it was officially renamed Mary Baldwin University to reflect its expanded academic offerings, including bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs.
