🌿🌊 Saturday Stream Clean-Up was AMAZING! 🌿🌊 💦 An amazing group of community members spent three hours removing water hungry vegetation and invasive plants from our educational wetland area! Our wetland is an incredibly important habitat for early stages of amphibian life. Now the wetland is better able to retain water for longer periods of time due to all the hard work done on Saturday. We found lots of cool critters, learned lots about aquatic plants, and had fun getting muddy! 🌳 Thank you for spending the day with us and we look forward to seeing everyone again at the next service event! 💚 (fb)

HAPPY MILL MONDAY! This is the third of a four-part series where we count down the Mondays until SPOOM weekend! The beavers are not the only ones doing woodworking at Eden Mill! 🪵🪚 The above photo features many of the tools that were used to prepare logs during the period when Eden Mill was used as a steam powered sawmill! This period was short lived; the mill was bought by Frank Wolfe in 1905 and due to stray sparks from the steam engine, the mill partially burned down in 1908. Fortunately, the mill was able to be rebuilt the same year, but it was no longer used as a sawmill. Instead, the building was once again sold to Marsteller and Van Sant, who decided to return to grist milling. 🪵🪚 A few of the tools on the wall are older iterations of tools that are still used today! The plumb-bob device we have on display is a metal cone hanging by twine. This device’s design is virtually the same today and used for the same purpose. You hang the twine from an area and due to gravity, the weighted cone will find the exact point directly below where the twine is hung from. 🪵🪚 The device in the top left-hand corner is an adze. Smaller versions of an adze can be used to form curves and notches in wood relatively safely, but the larger adze shown here required the wood worker to stand above a log with one leg on either side. To notch the wood, the worker would swing the adze between the legs, which means using this tool can lead to a very serious injury. 🥳 Though this period was short, it heavily impacted Eden Mill, so come learn more as we participate in SPOOM (Society for the Preservation of Old Mills) weekend! Join us June 7th from 10 AM - 3 PM or June 8th from 12 - 3 PM. We will have walk-in guided tours of the mill, corn tables, and other family fun activities. Make sure to bring your hunger for history!
