Individuals with disabilities, both physical and psychological challenges that may be discouraged from being active, are given the opportunity of diving. The goal of AQUANAUTS ADAPTIVE AQUATICS is to provide the adaptive sport of SCUBA diving to benefit people with disabilities, military veterans, and other special needs groups for the purpose of wellness, social interaction, life enrichment, and rehabilitation.

The Handicapped Scuba Association HSA founded in the 1980s is the leader in disabled dive training. HSA operates as an independent training and certifying agency and offers programs in conjunction with PADI NAUI SDI and SSI. Handicapped Scuba Associations program was developed at the University of CaliforniaIrvine and is recognized by the Council for National Cooperation in Aquatics CNCA Undersea Medical Society UMS and Our World Underwater OWU which together formed the basis for the Physical Performance Standards used today in the Multilevel Certification for Divers with Disabilities and Veteran Rehabilitation. AQUANAUTS ADAPTIVE AQUATICS under the direction of Executive Director Worth OBrien offers SCUBA lessons and courses.
