Delta Upsilon International Fraternity Inc
Delta Upsilon International Fraternity Inc, a U.S. nonprofit organization, is a collegiate social fraternity with a rich history dating back to its founding at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, on November 4, 1834. It is distinguished as one of the oldest men's fraternities in North America, and it was the first to be established as a non-secret society.
Founding and Philosophy
Delta Upsilon was founded by 30 men who were concerned about the influence of secret societies on campus and sought to create an inclusive organization based on principles of merit rather than secrecy. The founders aimed to promote friendship and character development among its members, adopting the motto "Dikaia Upotheke" or "Justice, Our Foundation" later in its development.
Expansion and Growth
Initially known as "The Social Fraternity," Delta Upsilon expanded rapidly. By 1847, it became part of the Anti-Secret Confederation, which encompassed chapters from several colleges. The fraternity officially adopted its current name and badge in 1864. In 1898, Delta Upsilon expanded internationally by establishing a chapter at McGill University in Montreal, Canada.
Activities and Programs
Delta Upsilon is involved in various educational and leadership programs. The fraternity is known for its commitment to building better men through initiatives that emphasize leadership development and global competency. It was among the first fraternities to offer nationwide educational programming for its chapters.
Governance
The fraternity operates through a bicameral legislative system, composed of the Undergraduate Convention and the Assembly of Trustees, which meet annually to make decisions regarding fraternity policies.
Challenges and Impact
Throughout its history, Delta Upsilon has navigated significant societal changes and economic challenges, including the Civil War, World War I, the Great Depression, and more recent social movements. The fraternity has maintained its commitment to inclusivity and merit-based membership, distinguishing it from other organizations during periods of social upheaval.
Alumni and Notability
Delta Upsilon's alumni include notable figures such as U.S. presidents, Supreme Court justices, Congressmen, Nobel laureates, renowned authors, astronauts, and influential businessmen.
Educational Foundation
In 1949, Delta Upsilon established its Educational Foundation, initially aimed at providing scholarships. Over time, the foundation has expanded its focus to support leadership training and educational programs across the fraternity. These initiatives are designed to enhance the personal and professional development of Delta Upsilon members.
