National Wild Turkey Federation
The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) is an international non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of wild turkeys and the preservation of hunting heritage. Founded in 1973, it has grown to include more than 250,000 members across the United States, Canada, Mexico, and 14 other countries.
Mission
The NWTF's mission focuses on two primary objectives:
- Wildlife Conservation: The organization works to maintain robust wild turkey populations by improving and managing habitat, conducting scientific research, and collaborating with government agencies and other partners.
- Preservation of Hunting Heritage: NWTF promotes outdoor education and the appreciation of hunting as a stewardship tool for wildlife management and conservation.
History
The NWTF was founded by Tom Rodgers, who was inspired by the need to address declining wild turkey populations due to habitat destruction and unregulated hunting practices. Initially, there were only about 1.3 million wild turkeys in North America; today, thanks in part to NWTF's efforts, that number has increased to over 7 million.
Programs and Initiatives
The NWTF supports various programs aimed at engaging different demographics in wildlife conservation and outdoor activities:
- JAKES (Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics, and Sportsmanship): Focuses on educating youth about wildlife management and conservation.
- Women in the Outdoors: Offers educational outdoor opportunities for women.
- Wheelin' Sportsmen: Provides adaptive outdoor activities for people with disabilities.
The organization also sponsors large-scale conservation projects, including habitat restoration and waterway conservation initiatives. NWTF's efforts have helped improve or acquire habitat on over 17 million acres of public, private, and corporate lands.
Fundraising and Community Engagement
One of the NWTF's primary fundraising events is the Hunting Heritage Super Fund Banquet, which was established in 1983. These events help support local conservation projects and introduce new members to the organization's mission.
In recent years, the NWTF has expanded its strategic vision to unite people under the "life-changing power of the outdoors," aiming to grow membership and chapters, while enhancing its role in wildlife research and community engagement.
Impact
Since its inception, the NWTF has been instrumental in reversing the decline of wild turkey populations and promoting sustainable hunting practices. The organization's work benefits not only wild turkeys but also other wildlife species and ecosystems, contributing to healthier forests, waterways, and communities across North America.
