Core Philosophies:• BikeVON- teaching the laws and rules of smart cycling while showing communities how to support cycling.-EDUCATE• BikeVON – to represent the League of The program title is The Velodrome Program. It offers Metro Detroit youth from under-resourced communities experiences for:• Learn the discipline associated with being an athlete. • To set goals and train to become part of a competitive cycling team.• Experiences to benefit from mentoring by our experienced coaches.• To learn and practice how to eat and exercise for a healthy life.• To learn how to become active citizens in their community. The major challenges for BikeVON is transportation; transportation of the youths and bikes and food. The effect limits the number of participants. Due to the ages of the youth, hours of practice and location of the facility is the program requires the organization to pick up and return the kids home. The facilities are not on a major bus route. Parents are either at work or do not have transportation to assist transporting youth. The uniqueness of the year 11 month program is the time a youth is immerse in the environment to support a change in behavior. Research shows, That some of the habits take around 254 days to form — the better part of a year! What this research suggests is that 21 days to form a habit is probably right, as long as all you want to do is drink a glass of water after breakfast. Anything harder is likely to take longer to become a really strong habit, and, in the case of some activities, much longer. BikeVON is a supportive environment where the youth and adults are practicing exercising and healthy eating together. This is extremely important because many families do not model that behavior.• As a yearly program, a returning youth has the opportunity to develop the athletic prowess and earn a college scholarship. • Youth learn how to set goals, evaluate results, and take steps to achieve the goals.• Teach youth the principles of bicycle riding and racing, as well as teach him/her teamwork and enhance his/her physical and psychological development.
