Dream Factory, Inc.
The Dream Factory is a national children's wish-granting organization headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky. The Dream Factory grants dreams to chronically and critically ill children ages 3 through 18 in areas where our chapters are located. The Dream Factory, Inc., the second-largest children's wish-granting organization in the United States, grants the dreams of children who have been diagnosed with critical or chronic illnesses and are 3 through 18 years of age. We serve children with chronic conditions as well and critical illnesses because we believe children with significant chronic conditions suffer physically and emotionally as well. Founded in Hopkinsville, Kentucky in 1980, The Dream Factory nationally has granted thousands of dreams in its history. Having no paid staff at the chapter level, we depend on very dedicated volunteers in over 30 chapters across the country to raise funds, arrange dream trips and procure special items for children in their own communities.
Dream Factory, Inc.
Overview The Dream Factory, Inc. is a nonprofit organization in the United States that grants the dreams of critically and chronically ill children. Founded in 1980 by Charles Henault, a South Central Bell employee, the organization is headquartered in Kentucky.
Mission The mission of The Dream Factory is to improve the quality of life for children aged three to eighteen suffering from serious illnesses by granting their dreams. Unlike some other wish-granting organizations, The Dream Factory does not limit its services to children with terminal illnesses, recognizing that both critically and chronically ill children experience substantial distress.
Structure
The Dream Factory operates over 30 chapters across the United States, making it one of the largest volunteer-driven wish-granting organizations. At the local level, The Dream Factory is entirely volunteer-run, with the only paid staff members at the National Headquarters. This structure helps maintain low overhead costs and ensures that a high percentage of donations go directly towards granting dreams. Specifically, 96.1% of all funds raised are used for direct program services[2].
Financials
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, donations to The Dream Factory are tax-deductible[3]. The organization's revenue is primarily composed of contributions and fundraising efforts within local communities[3]. This approach allows a significant portion of the funds to remain in the communities where they are raised, supporting local children in need.
Impact and Recognition
Since its inception, The Dream Factory has granted over 23,000 dreams, averaging approximately 350 each year[1]. These dreams often include trips to popular destinations like Walt Disney World, shopping sprees, and opportunities to meet celebrities or athletes. The organization's commitment to effective resource allocation has earned it a perfect 4-star rating from Charity Navigator for 13 consecutive years[2].
Ongoing Support
Beyond granting dreams, The Dream Factory maintains relationships with past recipients and their families through various events and newsletters. This ongoing support network provides continuous emotional support to families dealing with long-term health challenges.
Leadership and Governance
While specific leadership details such as the CEO or Board composition are not detailed here, the organization is governed by principles ensuring transparency and efficiency, as reflected in its financial management and volunteer-driven structure.
