Nebraska Zen Center Incorporated
The Nebraska Zen Center Incorporated (NZC) is a nonprofit organization and one of the oldest Sōtō Zen Buddhist communities in the United States. It was founded in 1975 by Dainin Katagiri Roshi.
History
The Nebraska Zen Center evolved from an informal association known as the Nebraska Zen Group, which formed in the early 1970s. This group was led by Bryan Daizen Victoria, who had studied Zen in Japan. However, it was Dainin Katagiri Roshi who formally established the Nebraska Zen Center in 1975. Katagiri Roshi was a prominent figure in American Sōtō Zen, having assisted Shunryu Suzuki Roshi in California and later founding the Minnesota Zen Meditation Center.
The Nebraska Zen Center has been located in Omaha's Bemis Park neighborhood since 1992. Initially, the community met in members' homes before acquiring and renovating a building to serve as the center. Over the years, the center has undergone further renovations to expand its facilities, which include a zendo and Buddha hall.
Mission and Practices
The Nebraska Zen Center is dedicated to the practice of meditation, study, and the cultivation of compassion and wisdom. It serves as a refuge where people of all backgrounds can learn about Zen Buddhism, practice together in fellowship, and pursue spiritual awakening. The center offers various activities, including daily morning zazen practices, Sunday Open Zen sessions (which include zazen, dharma talks, and community interaction), and occasional special services and retreats.
Leadership and Evolution
In its history, NZC has had several notable leaders. After Katagiri Roshi, Nonin served as abbot for 25 years, establishing the Prairie Wind Order of Zen temples. Dosho Port succeeded Nonin as head priest and led the center from 2016 to 2021, implementing new programs and expanding the center's digital presence during his tenure.
Community Adaptation
Like many religious organizations, the Nebraska Zen Center had to adapt during the COVID-19 pandemic by shifting some of its activities online, allowing members to continue their spiritual practices remotely. The center is gradually expanding its in-person offerings while maintaining virtual access for broader participation.
