Evanston Symphony Orchestra Association
The Evanston Symphony Orchestra Association is a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting classical music in the community. Founded in 1945 as the Evanston Civic Orchestra, it was renamed the Evanston Symphony Orchestra in 1956. The orchestra is a highly regarded all-volunteer community orchestra known for its high standards of performance and innovative programming.
History
The orchestra was established following World War II, when local classical musicians, many of whom were veterans, sought to create a musical outlet outside of Northwestern University's music groups. The first conductor was Elwyn Owen, who played a crucial role in launching the orchestra. In 1962, Frank Miller, the principal cellist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, took over as conductor and led the ESO for 22 years. Dr. Lynn Schornick succeeded Miller and conducted the orchestra from 1985 to 2002. Since 2003, Lawrence Eckerling has been the music director.
Mission and Goals
The ESO aims to use music to uplift the human spirit by engaging and enriching the community through performances, education, and inspiration. It provides opportunities for local musicians and offers programs tailored for youth and older adults. The orchestra emphasizes inclusivity and strives to present performances at affordable prices, welcoming the entire community.
Programming and Outreach
The Evanston Symphony Orchestra performs four season concerts and a holiday benefit concert, featuring diverse programming and renowned soloists. It also offers educational programs such as "Music in Your World" for Head Start children and a biennial young persons' concert. Additionally, the ESO hosts free outdoor summer concerts and pre-concert lectures.
Awards and Recognition
The ESO has been recognized for its contributions to the community, earning the "Orchestra of the Year" award in the community orchestra category from the Illinois Council of Orchestras in 2017 and again in 2024. In 2019, it was honored for "Community Relations of the Year." Past President Margaret Gergen received the "Board President of the Year" award in 2024 for her leadership during challenging times.
Financial Management
The organization maintains its financial strength through effective marketing, public relations, and fundraising efforts. It continues to underwrite music education and community engagement programs while ensuring affordable ticket prices for its performances.
