Animal AWARE

Animal AWARE is a U.S.-registered nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing animal welfare primarily in Guatemala. Despite being registered in the U.S., its operational focus is in Guatemala, where it has been active for over 25 years.

Background

The organization was established with the mission to improve the lives of animals through education and spay/neuter campaigns. This vision aligns with the philosophy of Albert Schweitzer, emphasizing compassion towards all living creatures for humanity's peace.

Mission and Objectives

• Education: Animal AWARE aims to educate people, particularly children, about the proper treatment of animals and the environment. This aligns with Humane Education principles.
• Rescue and Rehabilitation: The organization rescues and rehabilitates stray, abandoned, and injured domestic animals.
• Adoption: AWARE seeks to find permanent, loving homes for rescued animals. All animals available for adoption are neutered, vaccinated, and rehabilitated if necessary.
• Sterilization: By promoting and conducting spay/neuter campaigns, Animal AWARE combats the rise in street animal populations, reducing associated suffering.
• Veterinary Services: The organization provides accessible sterilization and general veterinary services to the community.

Operations

Animal AWARE operates the largest non-profit, non-governmental animal shelter in Central America (outside Mexico). The shelter is located in Sumpango, Guatemala, and cares for approximately 300 dogs and 70 cats. AWARE also conducts monthly low-cost spay/neuter clinics to address the street animal issue and collaborates with veterinarians and other organizations to amplify its impact.

Impact and Philosophy

Despite cultural challenges in Guatemala, where animals are often viewed as utilitarian, Animal AWARE has successfully promoted a shift in attitudes, encouraging more compassionate relationships between humans and animals. The organization advocates for recognizing the rights and needs of all species, emphasizing the interdependence of all life forms.

Operations Model

Animal AWARE works closely with local communities through education and rescue programs, fostering a culture of animal welfare. The organization depends on donations to sustain its operational costs, ensuring the shelter's operations, animal care, and community outreach programs.

Policy

Animal AWARE operates a No-Kill facility, except in cases where animals are too ill or damaged to enjoy life, in which humane euthanasia is used. All adopters are vetted to ensure suitable homes for the animals.

International Partnerships

AWARE has partnered with organizations like SPCA International to enhance its veterinary supply and financial capacity. This collaboration has enabled AWARE to assist over 1,500 animals annually in Guatemala.
