#OnThisDay in 1630, Charles II was born. He would later become King of England during the Restoration following the demise of Cromwell. The reign of King Charles I is one of the most famous and culturally rich periods in English history. Charles’ controversial marriage to the Catholic princess, Henrietta Maria of France, produced six children. The three eldest are pictured in M&G’s painting: Charles II (left), James II (middle), and Mary (right), along with the family’s pet spaniels. This tender portrait became an iconic image of the century, especially among Royalists. Though the poses are mature, van Dyck broke with a long-standing tradition of representing children as little adults and conveys instead a sense of youthful innocence and charm.
