Sierra Madre CERT

Sierra Madre CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the community of Sierra Madre and its surrounding areas. The organization operates under the direction of the Sierra Madre Fire Department.

Purpose and Goals

The primary purpose of Sierra Madre CERT is to educate citizens about disaster preparedness and train them in basic disaster response skills. This includes training in fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. The goal is to empower community members with the skills necessary to assist others during emergencies when professional responders are not immediately available.

Training and Operations

CERT members undergo extensive training, receiving more than 20 hours of initial instruction through FEMA-certified training classes. Following this initial training, they participate in ongoing refresher drills provided by Sierra Madre CERT and the Sierra Madre Fire Department. This training enables them to take an active role in emergency preparedness projects within their community.

Role in the Community

Sierra Madre CERT plays a critical role in enhancing community resilience during disasters. By equipping residents with essential emergency response skills, the organization supports local emergency services and promotes neighborhood-based assistance. In the aftermath of a disaster, CERT members help bridge the gap between the need for immediate help and the eventual arrival of professional emergency responders.
