Travelers Protective Association of America
The Travelers Protective Association of America (TPAA) is a fraternal benefit society in the United States that provides accidental injury benefits to its members. The organization was originally established by and for traveling salesmen but is now open to individuals from various occupational backgrounds.
History
The Travelers Protective Association of the United States was founded in June 1882 in Bellefontaine, Ohio. Initially, its focus was on obtaining concessions from hotels and transportation agencies and advocating for members' grievances. By the early 1890s, it expanded to include accident insurance benefits to secure its financial stability. Over time, the organization increased its membership and services, becoming more inclusive and diverse. Women were officially welcomed as members starting January 1, 1993.
Structure and Activities
The TPAA operates on a three-tiered structure, comprising local posts, state divisions, and a national organization. As of recent updates, it has multiple state divisions and posts across the country. The association focuses on community service projects, promoting child safety, and offering educational and leadership opportunities for its members.
Mission and Programs
The mission of the Travelers Protective Association of America includes championing hearing inclusion, advocating for safer communities, and providing affordable supplemental accidental insurance. The organization also supports deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals through its charitable arm, offering financial assistance for hearing-related needs. Community service projects and scholarships are key components of its activities.
Impact and Recognition
The TPAA has been influential in promoting legislation related to hotel sanitation and driver training. It has also been recognized for its annual Child Accident Prevention Week campaigns. Through its extensive programs, the association plays a significant role in educational initiatives and community leadership on child safety issues.
