Downtown Columbia Arts and Culture Commission Inc

Downtown Columbia Arts and Culture Commission Inc., now more commonly known as the Merriweather Arts and Culture Center (MACC), is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to fostering arts, culture, and community engagement in Columbia, Maryland. The organization was established in 2013 under its original name and has since become a key player in transforming Downtown Columbia into a vibrant cultural hub.

Purpose and Activities

MACC is focused on enhancing the cultural landscape of Columbia by promoting artistic and community programs. It is the owner of Merriweather Post Pavilion, a renowned outdoor amphitheater that hosts a variety of events, including concerts, festivals, and educational programs. Through collaborations with local partners, such as the Columbia Association, the Howard County Public School System, and the Howard County Library System, MACC aims to provide inclusive and accessible cultural experiences for the community.

Renovation and Modernization of Merriweather Post Pavilion

A major milestone for the organization was the acquisition of Merriweather Post Pavilion in 2016. Following this, MACC undertook a comprehensive renovation project that was completed in 2020. The renovations included significant upgrades to the stage house, backstage facilities, fan services plazas, seating areas, and the addition of elevated "SkyLawns" for improved fan experience[3].

Environmental Initiatives

In line with its commitment to sustainability, MACC has implemented environmentally friendly practices at Merriweather Post Pavilion. These include composting programs, the installation of solar panels powering the venue's house lights, and adherence to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards in new constructions, inspired by environmental advocate Jack Johnson[3].

Mission and Impact

The mission of MACC is to lead a thriving cultural ecosystem in Downtown Columbia, where local, regional, and global communities come together to celebrate art and culture. By fostering partnerships with a diverse range of stakeholders, MACC aims to make artistic and cultural opportunities accessible to all residents, aligning with the founding values of Columbia[2][3].
