COASTSIDE FISHING FOUNDATION
Serving the San Francisco Bay Region The Coastside Fishing Foundation is a California not for profit (501c3) company founded in 2014 by members of the Coastside Fishing Club to further the interests of recreational anglers and boaters, primarily in the San Francisco coastal and bay waters. Its major effort involves the net pen acclimation of hatchery Chinook salmon smolt in ocean water rather than releasing them in the Sacramento River, avoiding water quality issues, especially during the current drought. The delivery of smolt by the Department of Fish and Game usually begins early May at Pillar Point, usually after 10:30 in the morning.
Coastside Fishing Foundation
The Coastside Fishing Foundation is a California-based nonprofit organization, established in 2014 by members of the Coastside Fishing Club. It operates as a 501(c)(3) organization, aiming to promote the interests of recreational anglers and boaters in the San Francisco coastal and bay areas.
Mission and Projects
The foundation's primary mission is to enhance the sustainability of local fisheries through conservation efforts. One of its major projects involves the net pen acclimation of hatchery Chinook salmon smolts. This method helps acclimate young salmon to ocean conditions before their release, thereby increasing their chances of survival by avoiding the harsh conditions of the Sacramento River, particularly during drought periods.
To date, the Coastside Fishing Foundation has successfully acclimated approximately 5,450,800 Chinook salmon smolts in Pillar Point Harbor. The acclimation process involves feeding and acclimating the smolts in the harbor for about a week before releasing them into the ocean. Over time, these salmon are expected to return to areas where they were released, such as Pillar Point, after maturing in the ocean.
Funding and Support
The foundation is primarily funded through public grants and private donations. It also benefits from the support of like-minded conservation organizations. Additionally, it has received funding from local government bodies, such as the San Mateo County Parks and Recreation Department, which has provided crucial support for the smolt acclimation program.
Community Activities
Beyond its core conservation efforts, the Coastside Fishing Foundation supports community activities like kids' and veterans' fishing events. These programs are designed in collaboration with other organizations that share similar objectives, promoting fishing and conservation among various demographics.
Legacy and Impact
By focusing on sustainable fishing practices and conservation, the Coastside Fishing Foundation plays a vital role in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems in Northern California. Its efforts contribute significantly to increasing the abundance of fall-run Chinook salmon for both recreational and commercial use in California waters.
