Our beloved Aliʻi, Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole, was born on March 26th, 1871, in Kukuiula, Kauaʻi. This heroic Hawaiian dedicated his life to the well-being of his native people of Hawaiʻi. Known as “Ke Aliʻi Makaʻāinana” or “Prince of the People,” Kūhiō fought tirelessly to preserve our culture and return Hawaiians to their ancestral lands after the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi in 1893. As a delegate to the U.S. Congress, Kūhiō introduced initiatives to rehabilitate the Hawaiian race by placing them back on their soil. His vision paved the way for the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act of 1921, which aimed to ensure land access for Native Hawaiians, despite its complexities. Today, Hawaii Community Lending and other Hawaiian organizations like ourselves strive to fulfill Kūhiō’s vision by providing opportunities for Kanaka to reclaim their connection to the ʻāina and return them back to the land. Through affordable housing initiatives and community support, we are working towards a future where every Hawaiian can thrive here in their homeland of Hawaiʻi Nei. #PrinceKuhio #HawaiianHeritage #HawaiiCommunityLending #LandBack #AlohaSpirit #CulturalPreservation (fb)
