Bernard Baruch was known to have a “sweet tooth”. His favorite “sweet” was ice cream, but, when that was not available he opted for a nice piece of “cake” or dessert. This “cake box” sits atop the cabinets in the kitchen of Hobcaw House. Mr. Baruch would ask the cook/chef to place a piece of cake, pie, dessert in that box. He would come after dinner, get in that box and enjoy a “sweet” evening snack. Notice the place for a lock. Some say; there was a “lock” on the box with 2 keys- one for Baruch and the other for the cook/chef. Being 6’4” (at least), Mr. Baruch had no problem reaching the “cake box”!
