Regional Health Resource Center was formed 1971 to enhance the availability and quality of regional health care by providing services that rely upon broad public support and benefit most from collaboration amongst patient care providers. The COMMUNITY BLOOD SERVICES OF ILLINOIS division (formed 1972) is a regional blood center that: educates the public about the need for volunteer donation of blood and bone marrow; collects, tests, processes, and distributes approximately 30,000 voluntarily donated blood products each year for transfusion to critically ill or injured patients, and promotes and coordinates volunteer donation of bone marrow for patient transplants. As technology, patient volumes, and other external factors have made it feasible, historical services have included: 1) testing and counseling for genetic disorders; 2) installation, repair, and maintenance of life support equipment used in operating rooms and emergency departments; 3) patient education for chronic illnesses such as diabetes; and 4) applications of computer technology to health care issues, including health risk appraisal.
