Center for Old Music in the New World Inc

The Center for Old Music in the New World Inc is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting early music in the United States. Established in 1978, it is based in Lexington, Kentucky.

History and Activities

The organization's primary activity is producing concerts featuring early music performed by its resident ensemble, Musick's Company. Musick's Company has been active since around 1979 and consists of a core group of singers and instrumentalists. The ensemble's composition has varied over time but typically includes a choir of eight to 15 or more singers and a mixed instrumental ensemble. The ensemble's repertoire includes a wide range of early music styles and periods.

Educational and Cultural Contributions

In addition to concerts, the Center engages in educational activities and maintains a library of performance scores and parts. This library supports the preparation and performance of early music concerts by both Musick's Company and other artists.

Performances and Collaborations

One notable highlight of Musick's Company was its performance in Todi, a medieval town in Umbria, Italy, in 1988. The concert featured non-liturgical religious songs from medieval Europe, providing a unique cultural experience for both the performers and the audience. The ensemble has also performed music from diverse periods and regions, reflecting its commitment to preserving and showcasing early music.

Leadership and Direction

Historically, the ensemble was directed by Donna Boyd, who played a significant role in shaping its offerings. Following Boyd's passing, Joanna Manring became the music director, with Ted Gentry overseeing the instruments. This leadership ensures the continuation of the ensemble's mission to promote and perform early music.

Support and Donations

As a public charity, donations to the Center for Old Music in the New World Inc are tax-deductible, supporting its mission to enrich the cultural landscape of Central Kentucky with early music experiences.
