Did you know the first Memorial Day was held in Charleston? On May 1, 1865, newly freed African Americans organized and led a procession of 10,000 people to honor the fallen soldiers. Thousands of children sang, carried flowers, and marched to begin a powerful tradition of remembrance and freedom.
