Independent Order of Odd Fellows
The Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) is a non-political, non-sectarian international fraternal order founded in 1819 by Thomas Wildey in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. It evolved from the Order of Odd Fellows, which originated in England during the 18th century. The IOOF is also known as the "Triple Link Fraternity," symbolizing its motto "Friendship, Love and Truth."
History
The IOOF was originally chartered by the Independent Order of Oddfellows Manchester Unity in England but has operated independently since 1842. It maintains inter-fraternal relations with the English Order. Prior to its formal establishment, unofficial Odd Fellows Lodges existed in New York City from around 1806 to 1818.
Objectives and Activities
The IOOF aims to improve and elevate human character by promoting principles of friendship, love, truth, faith, hope, charity, and universal justice. Key activities include organizing charitable projects and aiding those in need, while fostering goodwill and harmony among people of different backgrounds. Members are guided by the command to "visit the sick, relieve the distressed, bury the dead and educate the orphan."
Structure and Membership
The IOOF is structured with a Sovereign Grand Lodge and local lodges across 26 countries, totaling approximately 600,000 members in over 10,000 lodges. The organization provides an international social network for its members and conducts degrees of membership through allegorical ceremonies and symbols.
Nonprofit Status
In the United States, some chapters of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows are designated as 501(c)(10) or 501(c)(8) organizations. Donations to these organizations are typically tax deductible. The IOOF also engages in various charitable and community activities, reflecting its commitment to social welfare and fraternity.
Notable Operations
The IOOF is involved in operating retirement communities, such as The Meadows of Napa Valley and Saratoga Retirement Community in California, which embody the principles of friendship, love, and truth by providing a supportive environment for seniors. These communities serve as a testament to the organization's long-standing mission of serving others.
