Main Street Housing

Main Street Housing, a peer-operated organization, creates life changing housing opportunities and empowers people living with mental health disabilities to have a place to call home.

Main Street Housing

Main Street Housing is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing affordable and independent housing opportunities for individuals and families living with mental health needs in Maryland. As a peer-operated organization, it empowers those with mental health disabilities to thrive in stable living environments.

History

Main Street Housing was founded in 1999 as a program of On Our Own of Maryland. It became an incorporated subsidiary organization in 2001. The founders, who had extensive experience within the public mental health system, aimed to transform the approach to housing for people with disabilities. Historically, housing for those with psychiatric disabilities was often linked to participation in mental health services, which could lead to housing insecurity if individuals achieved greater independence.

Mission

The mission of Main Street Housing is to develop quality, affordable, rental housing across Maryland for individuals and families with mental health needs. It emphasizes the importance of being a good tenant as the primary requirement for maintaining housing, rather than the individual's mental health status. This approach allows residents to be treated as tenants rather than patients, promoting genuine recovery and wellness.

Approach

Main Street Housing operates on a recovery-based model, focusing on independence and self-sufficiency. The organization aims to expand its housing opportunities annually, with the goal of establishing housing in every Maryland jurisdiction. It is nationally recognized for its innovative housing model, known as the "Main Street Model", which prioritizes tenants' rights and responsibilities without mandating participation in specific mental health services.

Status

Main Street Housing is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, committed to transparency and accountability, reflecting its commitment to empowering individuals with mental health disabilities to live fulfilling lives.
