Islamic Society of Greenville

The Islamic Society of Greenville (ISG) is a nonprofit organization based in Greenville, South Carolina. It was established in 1989 to serve the local Muslim community, which began forming in the early 1970s as Muslim families moved to the area.

Mission and Activities

The society operates primarily as a religious and cultural center, providing a space for Muslims to congregate for prayers and to engage in educational and social activities. It hosts all five daily prayers, with the Friday Jummah prayers being held at the Upstate Islamic Center in nearby Greer.

• Daily Prayers: The Masjid offers all daily prayers.
• Jummah Prayers: These are conducted in two shifts at the Upstate Islamic Center.
• Weekend School: Held on Sundays, focusing on Islamic studies, Arabic language, and Quranic education.

• Quran Tafseer Halaqa: A study group focused on the interpretation of the Quran.
• Hifz Program: A program for memorizing the Quran, offered at the Upstate Islamic Center.
• Community Events: The society organizes events such as fundraising dinners, clothing donation pick-ups, and book discussions.

History

The Islamic Society of Greenville was formed by a group of local Muslims in 1988. The first mosque was purchased in 1989, marking a significant milestone for the community. The mosque, previously a Protestant church, was renovated over several years to suit Islamic worship practices.
