We did it, Minnesota! 🦫🎉 After a four-year campaign, the Minnesota legislature signed a bill designating the Giant Beaver (Castoroides ohioensis) as Minnesota's state fossil! This Ice Age mammal, which could grow to 7.5 feet long and weigh over 200 pounds, roamed Minnesota until about 10,000 years ago and represents an important chapter in our state's natural heritage. With Governor Walz’s signature, Minnesota will become the 47th state to designate an official fossil, with the unique distinction of including translations in both Dakota and Ojibwe languages in the bill.
