Welcome to the NFMLTA

THE PURPOSE OF THE NFMLTA IS THE EXPANSION, PROMOTION, AND IMPROVEMENT OF THE TEACHING OF LANGUAGES, LITERATURES, AND CULTURES THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES THROUGH A VARIETY OF ACTIVITIES INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, PUBLICATION OF THE MODERN LANGUAGE JOURNAL. THE NATIONAL FEDERATION OF MODERN LANGUAGE TEACHERS ASSOCIATIONS WAS FOUNDED IN 1916. THE CHARTER MEMBER ORGANIZATIONS WERE THE CENTRAL STATES CONFERENCE ON THE TEACHING OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES, THE NEW JERSEY FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHERS ASSOCIATIONS, AND THE NEW YORK STATE ASSOCIATION OF FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHERS. CURRENTLY, THERE ARE 17 MEMBER ORGANIZATIONS.

OUR PURPOSE The expansion and promotion of research and the improvement of the teaching and learning of modern world languages literatures linguistics and cultures by a variety of activities including but not limited to grants awards and the publication of The Modern Language Journal MLJ. Grants NFMLTA in partnership with the MLJ and the National Council of Less Commonly Taught Languages NCOLCTL offers a variety travel dissertation and research support grants for graduate students and other language professionals whose research is related to the expansion promotion and improvement of the teaching of world languages literatures and cultures. Deadlines vary for NFMLTA support grants and applications should be completed online.
