Description

Peyton Walker Foundation

The Peyton Walker Foundation is a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free heart screenings for students and athletes between the ages of 10 and 22, primarily serving Central Pennsylvania. The foundation's mission is to educate communities about heart disease, particularly sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) among young people, and to facilitate early detection and prevention of cardiac conditions.

Background

The foundation was established in response to the sudden cardiac death of Peyton Walker, a 19-year-old college student who passed away on November 2, 2013. Peyton's death was attributed to a genetic heart condition known as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Despite being aware of her condition, Peyton lived a vibrant life filled with outdoor activities and a passion for healthcare.

Mission

The Peyton Walker Foundation aims to prevent similar tragedies by offering comprehensive heart screenings, including vital sign checks, heart murmur evaluations, and electrocardiograms (EKGs). When necessary, echocardiograms are also provided at no cost. In addition to screenings, the foundation educates participants and their families on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

Services

  • Heart Screenings: These are conducted at no cost to students aged 10-22, focusing on those not currently under cardiologist care and who have not previously been screened by the foundation.
  • CPR and AED Training: Participants are trained in CPR and AED use, enhancing the community's ability to respond to cardiac emergencies.
  • Equipment Donations: The foundation collaborates with other organizations to donate AEDs to schools, sports stadiums, and emergency services in Central Pennsylvania.

Partnerships

The Peyton Walker Foundation partners with the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute to enhance its educational and screening efforts. This partnership involves medical expertise and support, including cardiologists and other healthcare professionals contributing to the foundation's educational programs.

Recognition

As of recent evaluations, the Peyton Walker Foundation holds a Four-Star rating from Charity Navigator, indicating a strong level of transparency, accountability, and financial health.

Impact

The foundation plays a crucial role in identifying undiagnosed heart conditions in youth, a demographic where sudden cardiac arrest is often the leading cause of death. While standard sports and physical examinations may not include comprehensive heart screenings, the Peyton Walker Foundation bridges this gap, ensuring that young individuals receive necessary care and awareness about heart health.
