You can’t have sustainability without survival. That’s the core message Emma Klatman brings to this new podcast from the Danish Diabetes and Endocrine Academy. She shares insights into the reality for young people with type 1 diabetes in low-income countries, where insulin and support are often out of reach, and unpacks why Life for a Child refuses the idea that you have to choose between saving lives now or building systems for the future. Emma discusses our two-part approach: meeting urgent needs today while strengthening systems for tomorrow. But she’s clear and says that Life for a Child doesn’t “build sustainability” by stepping in and taking over. Instead, the program supports local partners to do it themselves. That includes helping clinics increase diagnosis rates and survival, providing tools to deliver quality care, and demonstrating what’s possible when the right support is in place. It also means generating data where it doesn’t exist, including how many young people have type 1 diabetes, on the cost of care, and on country progress toward universal health coverage. It also means supporting advocacy at the community level, empowering young people and families to drive change from within. If you’ve ever wondered how Life for a Child balances this two-part approach supporting over 100 partners in 53 countries, then this episode is for you. Tune in to the Danish Diabetes and Endocrine Academy podcast to hear how Life for a Child is working across the spectrum: from survival to sustainability. “There aren’t many old pictures of me because during that time my family had really given up on me.” At 13, Aime Manzi had already been through misdiagnosis, stigma and being told he wasn’t worth sending back to school. But everything changed when he found the right support. Now he is Dr. Manzi. He helps other children with diabetes believe in their future. Read how he got there https://lifeforachild.org/2025/05/13/dr-manzi-gets-it-hes-lived-it (fb)
