Description

Delta Sigma Pi

Delta Sigma Pi (ΔΣΠ) is a coeducational professional business fraternity and one of the largest in the United States. It was founded on November 7, 1907, at the School of Commerce, Accounts and Finance of New York University in New York City.

Purpose

Delta Sigma Pi is organized to foster the study of business in universities, encourage scholarship, social activity, and the association of students for their mutual advancement. The fraternity aims to promote closer affiliation between the commercial world and students of commerce, and to foster a higher standard of commercial ethics and culture, as well as civic and commercial welfare of the community.

History

The fraternity was established by Alexander F. Makay, H. Albert Tienken, Harold V. Jacobs, and Alfred Moysello. Its second chapter was founded at the Northwestern School of Commerce. The organization experienced rapid expansion in the early 1920s and established its national headquarters in Chicago, Illinois in 1924. In 1957, the central office moved to Oxford, Ohio. A significant change occurred in 1975 when chapters were mandated to initiate female business students, aligning with Title IX. This move marked Delta Sigma Pi as inclusive and expanded its membership base.

Symbols and Traditions

The fraternity's badge features a skull and crossbones, superimposed on a wreath of leaves, with amethyst eyes and a crown. The colors of Delta Sigma Pi are old gold and royal purple. The red rose was adopted as the official flower in 1921, partly because one of the founders' wives, Rose Jacobs, loved roses. The iconic song, "Rose of Deltasig," was adopted in 1926 as the fraternity's official song.

Chapters

Delta Sigma Pi has installed 305 collegiate chapters, with 218 currently active. Additionally, there are 48 franchised alumni chapters in the United States and numerous locations worldwide where alumni are active. The fraternity is distinct from social fraternities with similar names.

Membership and Benefits

Membership in Delta Sigma Pi offers numerous benefits, including internship and full-time job placement assistance, access to a national network for career opportunities and scholarships, and opportunities for leadership development and community service. Members are also part of a lifelong brotherhood.

Tax Status

Delta Sigma Pi operates as a nonprofit organization with its EIN: 465740151.
