Overview

People to People International (PTPI) is a U.S.-based non-profit organization, initially established on September 11, 1956, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower as part of the United States Information Agency. After Eisenhower's presidency, it transitioned into a private non-governmental organization, becoming a Missouri not-for-profit corporation. President Eisenhower served as the chairman of its board of trustees and was recognized as the founder of the non-profit entity.

Goals and Programs

The primary mission of PTPI has been to promote international understanding and friendship through educational, cultural, and humanitarian activities. It achieves this by facilitating direct exchanges of ideas and experiences among individuals from different countries and cultures. The organization has been involved in various initiatives, including adult travel programs, the EXPERIENCE program for students, Peace Camp, and the Global Landmine Initiative. Additionally, PTPI offers a School and Classroom Program, Community, University, and Student Chapters, as well as the Global Youth Forum.

History and Leadership

Early leaders involved with President Eisenhower included influential figures such as Joyce C. Hall, Walt Disney, and Bob Hope. Over time, PTPI expanded its reach to over 160 countries, fostering connections among diverse cultures. The organization has faced challenges, including financial difficulties exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to its bankruptcy filing in March 2022. Despite this, local chapters continue to operate independently.

Awards and Recognition

In 2006, PTPI was honored with the Cavaliere per la Pace (Knight of Peace Award), becoming the first organization to receive this distinction. Previous recipients included notable figures like Mother Teresa and Mikhail Gorbachev.
