A new documentary hits at a small part of the problem but mostly bangs the current marketing messages. Teaching a child to read can't require some weird "science of reading". What about the science of science? Nations around the world teach every child to read in more than one language. So, yes, it is about money in the USA and infrastructure. It is about a lopsided system where children are the losers. (70% of poor children can't read.) When a documentarian says with distain "children had to memorize" I want to scream. Try learning music, science, a second language without memorizing. Memorizing is great for the brain. (fb)
