Louisville Academy of Music, Inc.
The Louisville Academy of Music, Inc. is a non-profit community music school located in Louisville, Kentucky. Founded on February 15, 1954, by Robert French and Donald Murray, it has served as a pivotal institution for music education in the region.
History
Initially operating from rented rooms in the Highlands area of Louisville, the academy expanded its facilities over the years. In 1956, it moved to 1020 S. Fifth Street, and by 1957, it was incorporated as a non-profit educational institution. The academy relocated to a larger space at 505 W. Ormsby Avenue in July 1957, where it established a piano technology department and expanded its programs. In 1958, Robert French founded the Louisville Youth Orchestra, further enriching the musical landscape.
By 1960, the academy had expanded its reach by acquiring the St. Matthews School of Music, and in 1971, it moved to its current location on Frankfort Avenue. This strategic move allowed Robert and Ruth French to fully develop their vision for the school.
In 2011, Robert French passed away, leaving behind an extensive music archive. Ruth French continued as president and violin instructor until her retirement in June 2018. Leadership was then transferred to Sara Louise Callaway, a former violin student of Ruth's.
Programs and Impact
The Louisville Academy of Music offers lessons in a variety of instruments, including piano, strings, voice, woodwinds, brass, guitar, and percussion, catering to students of all ages. The academy is committed to creating a supportive environment where students can grow both as musicians and individuals.
In addition to private lessons, the academy engages with the community through free music programs, reaching over 3,000 people annually at multiple locations across Kentuckiana. These initiatives underscore the academy's belief that music belongs to everyone and aim to break down socio-economic barriers, fostering inclusivity in music education.
Recognitions and Achievements
The Louisville Academy of Music has been recognized for its contributions to arts education. Robert French received the Governor's Awards in the Arts in 1999, and in 2024, the academy itself was honored with the Governor's Awards in the Arts for Education. The academy has provided nearly a million music lessons since its inception and has trained over 10,000 students, many of whom have gone on to become accomplished musicians and music educators.
The organization holds a 4/4 Star rating by Charity Navigator, reflecting its strong financial health and commitment to community service. The academy emphasizes equity in music education, believing that learning music can open doors to success across various fields.
