Jayhawk Institute-Enduring Legacy
The Jayhawk Institute-Enduring Legacy is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the cultural heritage of the Pacific Northwest, particularly focusing on indigenous art and traditions.
Founding and Mission
Founded by Duane Pasco, a noted Pacific Northwest Native Style artist, and his wife Betty Pasco, a Suquamish tribal elder, weaver, artist, and teacher, the Institute aims to learn, conserve, and share the legacy of Pacific Northwest indigenous art and history. This mission is rooted in their long-standing involvement in teaching and sharing their arts with students, tribal members, and others interested in the rich cultural heritage of the region.
Values and Activities
The Jayhawk Institute honors the teachings of their ancestors and strives to promote an integrated understanding of life and culture, emphasizing the sacredness of land, language, traditions, and spirituality. They cherish the wisdom of elders and seek to be accessible to people of all ages and learning paths. The Institute values the curiosity of its audience and shares knowledge with generosity and humility.
Betty Pasco, as a founding member, has been instrumental in various community roles, including being a board member of the Suquamish Elders Council and the Kitsap County Unity Coalition. Her work with the Institute reflects her desire to leave a lasting legacy of honorable teachings for the youth.

The Institute engages with various partners to ensure the stewardship of cultural and environmental resources. It collaborates with organizations like the Corps of Engineers Natural Resources Education Foundation and the Partnership of the National Trails System, reflecting its commitment to broader social and environmental stewardship. The Jayhawk Institute also benefits from its association with the Suquamish Foundation, which supports tribal and community projects.

My good friend Duane Pasco passed away this week. Duane was the most remarkable person I have ever known, and leaves as a legacy not just a huge body of impressive works of art but an entire generation of artists that learned their craft from him. Since the late 60's Duane spent what amounted to years of his life teaching what had become lost arts to communities up and down the Pacific Northwest from Washington to Alaska—communities where once rich and vibrant traditions had been stomped out by oppressive government actions and policies that ended knowledge that had been handed down through generations of artists for millennia. Through inquisitiveness and scholarship in academic archives and museums around the world Duane learned and became a master of the lost arts, and then spent as much time teaching them as he did creating new works. Duane continued to work past the age of 90, taking commissions and passing knowledge to apprentices. He worked right into cancer treatments and went until the pain made it impossible. I am in the middle of making a film about Duane's life, I look forward to sharing it with you when it is finally complete so that more people can know this remarkable man. Duane is survived by his children and his wife, Suquamish artist Betty Pasco. (fb)
