Today, I had the privilege of attending a luncheon with Jerry Bowyer, CEO of Bowyer Research, host of Meeting of Minds, and financial journalist. Although he positions himself as an economist, I was struck by his theological insights, particularly his view on how the Bible does not create for God's people a dualistic divide between the marketplace and the church. Here are two insights from his talk: It is not the marketplace that desecrates religious people; rather, it is religious hypocrisy that poisons the marketplace. Christians can—and should—serve as salt and light in the business world by leading with spiritual authenticity, ethical integrity, and effectiveness. (This vision aligns closely with our mission at Hodos Institute.) The influence of religious people in the marketplace should not be seen as a mere pursuit of formal power. Instead, it is through active participation and commitment to addressing social and economic challenges that real impact is made. Influence comes through genuine love, service, and integrity.
