Grand Rapids Art Museum
Overview
The Grand Rapids Art Museum (GRAM) is a nonprofit organization located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, United States. Established in 1910 as the Grand Rapids Art Association, it has evolved into a prominent cultural institution dedicated to connecting people through art, creativity, and design.
Mission and Vision
The mission of GRAM is to connect people through art, fostering creativity and inspiration within the community. Its vision is to lead and inspire West Michigan to become the most imaginative and creative community globally.
History
GRAM was founded in 1910 by Mrs. Della (Foote) Perkins, who envisioned a city-wide movement to establish a strong art association that would eventually lead to a valuable art collection for Grand Rapids. Over the years, the museum has expanded its collections and moved to different locations, with its current LEED Gold certified building opening in 2007.
Collections
GRAM holds a diverse collection of over 7,000 works of art, encompassing American and European 19th and 20th-century paintings, sculptures, and more than 3,000 works on paper. The museum also has a growing collection in design and modern craft, reflecting the city's legacy in design and manufacturing.
Programs and Exhibitions
The museum offers a variety of programs including guided tours, hands-on workshops, artist lectures, and live music events. It hosts both local and national exhibitions, showcasing a wide range of artistic mediums and styles.
Architecture
GRAM's current building is the world's first LEED Gold certified art museum, designed by London-based Munkenbeck+Marshall Architects and completed by Kulapat Yantrasast of wHY Architecture. The building features 20,000 square feet of gallery space within its 125,000 square foot structure.
Impact
GRAM serves as a cultural beacon and civic anchor, enriching the lives of its community and fostering practical learning skills through diverse platforms for experiences and dialogue. It continues to be a significant educational resource for the Grand Rapids community and beyond.
