Cullinan Park Conservancy

Overview

Cullinan Park Conservancy is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the enhancement, protection, and promotion of Joseph S. and Lucie H. Cullinan Park, a significant 754-acre nature preserve located in Sugar Land, Texas. Established in 2013, the Conservancy is registered as a 501(c)(3) organization and plays a vital role in the stewardship of this regional park.

History

The park itself was formed in 1989 when the City of Houston, in partnership with the Houston Parks Board, acquired the land with funding from the Nina Cullinan Estate, The Brown Foundation, and city park bond funds. The park is named after Joseph S. and Lucie H. Cullinan, who envisioned the area as a “place of beauty and peacefulness.” It opened to the public in 1991 as a nature preserve and has served as a refuge for both wildlife and visitors amidst the urban development of Fort Bend County.

Since January 2016, the management of Cullinan Park has been conducted under an Interlocal Agreement between the City of Houston and the City of Sugar Land. The City of Sugar Land is responsible for the operational aspects of the park, while the Conservancy focuses on enhancing the visitor experience and protecting the natural environment.
