On this Memorial Day weekend lets take a moment to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for this country. People like Klaas Visser. Klaas immigrated here from the Netherlands, following two uncles who did the same a generation earlier. Klaas lived just south of town and made his living selling vegetables from his farm and was a cook in the Army. Like an uncle in WWI, he fought for his new country and would die at the hands of the Germans. Klaas's squad would be captured by the Nazis during the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium. Unfortunately he wasn't offered the opportunity of being a POW, but was instead executed by the SS at La Vau Richard in Belgium on December 17, 1944. He is interred in the Alto Cemetery. Please take a moment to consider why people like Klaas gave up everything to come to this country and to try and make this a place people still want to come to. (fb)

Last Sunday was #InternationalMuseumDay and we’d like to remind our community of the work we do, and invite you all to join us! Our volunteers—your neighbors—put together exhibits that tell the story of our city. We always need help researching the objects in our collection so we can tell more stories! We attend conferences and meet with other area museums throughout the year, where we learn best-practices and new methods to better-serve our community. Our gang serves our neighbors In other ways, like providing a meal at the community table every year. Finally, we collaborate with other museums, sharing stories beyond Waupun’s borders, leading to better-understanding Waupun and our world.
