It's time to #TakeAWildGuess again! Can you guess what species is in this container? Put your guesses in the comments below, and stay tuned for a reveal post this afternoon! (fb)

May is one of our busiest months for multiple reasons - babies are being born, people are out enjoying the warmer weather, spring rains are putting turtles at road crossings, and as this Black-throated Green Warbler reminds us, spring migration is in full swing! This warbler unfortunately collided with a window, an issue that claims the lives of over one billion birds every year. So how does this happen? Birds don't see windows as "glass," but rather whatever is reflecting in the glass - often sky, trees, or other avenues of escape when birds are flushed or traveling through an area. These collisions are preventable by treating the outsides of windows with either decals, screens, or other methods that break up the reflections of the glass. Whatever medium you choose to use, make sure there's no more than 2" of space between designs/decals both vertically and horizontally, or else smaller birds will attempt to fly between them! Lastly, if you find a bird you know or suspect hit a window, do NOT release that bird or leave them where you found them - they need immediate medical attention! Window strikes often cause internal injuries that cant often be obviously seen, such as internal bleeding, concussions, eye trauma, ruptured air sacs, respiratory distress, broken bones, and more. Some birds can even fly off minutes after a strike, only for their conditions to worsen over hours or even days, often leading to death. If you find a bird you believe struck a window, immediately get that bird contained in a ventilated box with a paper towel or t-shirt, close the box, and place the box somewhere warm, dark, and quiet, away from children and pets. Then call your nearest bird rehabilitator and get them into care as soon as possible! Again, even if the bird appears "better," do NOT release them! #WindowStrikes #SpringMigration #Songbirds #BlackThroatedGreenWarbler #WildlifeRehab #WildlifeMedicine (fb)
