International Association of Fire Fighters

The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) is a labor union representing paid full-time firefighters and emergency medical services personnel in the United States and Canada. Founded in 1918, it is affiliated with the AFL-CIO in the United States and the Canadian Labour Congress in Canada.

Mission and History

The IAFF has been instrumental in advancing firefighters' rights, health, and safety, particularly in the 20th century. It has advocated for better wages, benefits, working conditions, and increased safety measures for its members. The IAFF has also played a crucial role in promoting the expansion of full-time professional fire services.

Membership and Affiliations

As of 2024, the IAFF has approximately 344,440 members across more than 3,500 affiliate organizations. Its members protect over 85% of the population in the United States and Canada, making it a significant force in both countries' emergency services.

Center of Excellence for Behavioral Health Treatment and Recovery

In 2017, the IAFF announced plans for the Center of Excellence, located near Washington, D.C., to treat post-traumatic stress disorder and substance abuse among firefighters. The center aims to help members recover and return to work while also training peer support groups to address these issues.

FIREPAC

FIREPAC, the IAFF's political action committee, was established in 1978. It is recognized as one of the most active PACs in the country, known for its bipartisan support of candidates who back firefighters' interests.

Charitable and Community Work

IAFF Charitable Foundation

Founded in 2011, the IAFF Charitable Foundation supports members affected by disasters, promotes fire prevention, advocates for firefighter health and safety, and educates the public on burn trauma.

Muscular Dystrophy Association Partnership

IAFF is the largest national sponsor of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), having raised over $558 million since 1954. The annual "Fill the Boot" campaign is a significant contributor to MDA programs.

Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial

The IAFF hosts an annual memorial ceremony in Colorado Springs, Colorado, honoring over 8,800 fallen firefighters and EMS personnel whose names are etched on the memorial wall. The ceremony typically takes place in September.

Legislative and Advocacy Efforts

The IAFF is a strong advocate for legislative changes benefiting firefighters. It organizes a large legislative conference in Washington, D.C., bringing together political leaders and union members to address critical issues affecting fire services.

Organization Structure

The IAFF is led by a General President and a General Secretary/Treasurer. Its leadership is involved in national and international efforts to improve working conditions, health, and safety standards for firefighters.
