Dubuque Museum of Art
The Dubuque Museum of Art (DuMA), located in Iowa, is one of the oldest cultural institutions in the United States. Founded in 1874 as the Dubuque Art Association, it has a rich history of promoting art and cultural engagement in the region.
History
The museum's origins date back to February 24, 1874, when it was first organized by a group of community leaders at the Lorimer House in Dubuque. Over the years, it relocated to various sites, including private homes, the Carnegie-Stout Public Library, and even a former county jail. In 1996, the organization changed its name to the Dubuque Museum of Art. In 1999, it moved into its current state-of-the-art facility downtown, where it continues to serve as a cultural hub for the community.
The museum has undergone significant changes and expansions throughout its history, with a notable shift in 1996 when it adopted its current name. In the early to mid-20th century, influential figures such as Kate VanDuzee, Louise Halliburton, Adrian Dornbush, Dorothy Bechtel Rossiter, and Grant Wood played crucial roles in shaping the institution's growth.
Collections and Exhibitions
The Dubuque Museum of Art is renowned for its extensive permanent collection, which includes approximately 2,200 works of art. A highlight of its collection is one of the world's largest assemblies of Grant Wood's art, alongside a complete set of Edward S. Curtis' photogravures of The North American Indian. The museum also hosts the works of celebrated artists like Arthur Geisert.
In addition to its permanent collection, the museum regularly presents a variety of temporary, juried, curated, and traveling exhibitions. These exhibitions feature both local and nationally recognized artists, aiming to engage diverse audiences across the Tri-State area.
Educational Programs and Outreach
Beyond its exhibitions, the museum offers a rich array of educational programs for both youth and adults. These include art classes, outreach activities, and special events designed to foster a deeper appreciation of art within the community. The museum strives to connect people with their cultural heritage, ensuring that art remains accessible and relevant to people of all ages.
Accolades and Affiliations
The Dubuque Museum of Art is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, a distinction it received in the early 2000s. This accreditation underscores the museum's commitment to maintaining high standards in its operations, collections, and programming. It is also a Smithsonian Affiliate, enhancing its role as a significant cultural institution in the region.
Mission and Values
The museum's mission is to excite, inspire, and connect the community through art. It aims to create a thriving cultural hub where diverse backgrounds come together to foster understanding and appreciation of the arts. Key values include promoting artistic excellence, cultivating community partnerships, and ensuring inclusivity.
Future Developments
As of 2025, the museum is set to undergo a major renovation aimed at expanding its facilities and enhancing its community-oriented programs. During the construction phase, the museum will temporarily relocate to ensure uninterrupted service. This renovation reflects the institution's ongoing commitment to its mission of cultural enrichment and community engagement.
In celebration of its 150th anniversary in 2024, the museum exhibited "Dubuque by Design," an exhibit showcasing the city's history through innovative designs, highlighting the intersection of art and local history. This milestone marked a moment for reflection and future planning, as the museum looks to build stronger bridges between art and community life.
