Overview

Blacks in Government, Inc. (BIG) is a nonprofit organization established in 1975 by a group of African American employees working at the Department of Health, Education and Welfare (now known as the Department of Health and Human Services) in Rockville, Maryland. The organization was formally incorporated in 1976 under the jurisdiction of the District of Columbia.

Mission

BIG's mission is to advocate for equal opportunity and professional development for African Americans in government. The organization focuses on promoting equity, excellence, and opportunity in all aspects of American life, particularly within public service. BIG functions as an employee support group, community resource, and advocacy group, addressing issues that affect Black civil service employees across federal, state, municipal, and county levels.

Activities and Programs

BIG is known for its professional development initiatives, including an annual training conference launched in 1978. This conference attracts national experts, policy makers, and grassroots leaders to discuss critical issues impacting government workers and their communities. The event provides training that enhances career development and workplace problem-solving skills.

In addition to professional development, BIG conducts youth-focused programs aimed at preparing students for future careers. These include the Training in Communications Program and the Information Superhighway Student Competition, both targeting students in grades 9-12. The programs focus on developing essential communication and computer skills among young people.

Blacks in Government has over 230 chapters across the United States, reflecting its widespread influence and commitment to the needs of African American government employees nationwide. Each chapter works to address specific local issues while aligning with BIG's overarching goals of equity, excellence, and opportunity.

  • Excellence: The organization strives to promote excellence among Black public servants through professional development and mentorship.
  • Opportunity: BIG seeks to provide opportunities for African Americans to advance in their careers and make meaningful contributions to their communities.
