A proposed change would stop the ESA from protecting the habitat species need to survive. The Endangered Species Act, established 50 years ago, has been one of the USA’s most powerful tools for preventing extinction. Currently (and for decades), the ESA has protectedwildlife in two ways: 1️⃣ preventing people from directly killing the species 🐝 2️⃣ preventing people from doing things that harm the species, including damaging the habitat the species needs to live 🏞️ However, the US Fish & Wildlife Service, which enforces the ESA, has proposed to remove that 2nd type of protection. This would mean that, even for critically endangered species, people and companies would be allowed to destroy the only habitat where that species survives. Protecting habitat is perhaps the most important strategy for conservation. Without it, the ESA would be drastically weaker, and many plants and animals would be in serious trouble.
