Jasper Schmoock '25 is an Environmental Science major and Data Science minor whose senior capstone explores how deer browsing impacts forest ecosystems in the Eastern U.S. Working with classmates and faculty mentor Eric Griffin, Jasper helped build deer exclosures—fenced-off areas that prevent deer from accessing understory vegetation—in a northern hardwood forest. By comparing plant life inside and outside the fences, the team is studying how overabundant deer populations affect biodiversity and forest regeneration. The project was physically demanding, but Jasper says the collaboration and shared purpose kept the group motivated. It also brought together many parts of his WWC experience—from forestry and conservation biology courses to hands-on skills learned through work crews. Jasper received a $400 grant from the NCICU Undergraduate Research Program to support the project—his first time applying for a grant. The experience gave him a boost of confidence and some unexpected recognition from faculty. After graduation, Jasper hopes to pursue work at the intersection of forestry, GIS, and climate change—possibly in forest carbon analysis or climate adaptation planning. (fb)

Frances Feay ’25 has combined their love of biology with a passion for wool and a dedication to animal welfare in their capstone project. Working closely with Dr. Benavides, Frances investigated the potential effects of striping patterns painted onto sheep at the Warren Wilson Farm to deter flies, inspired by a 2019 study on similar patterns in cows. “The study was driven by the hypothesis that zebras’ stripes may not only offer camouflage, but also deter disease-carrying flies,” Frances explained. "I was drawn to this type of project because I've been a member of the Fiber Arts Crew for most of my time at Wilson, and I love working with wool. It felt personal, and I had to be a part of it." The project, which spans over two years, became a unique way for Frances to engage with their academic and extracurricular interests, merging their passion for biology with a deep connection to the Warren Wilson Farm. "It’s encompassing of my cross-campus loves at Wilson,” they said. After graduation, Frances is pursuing a career in healthcare, applying to the MSN program at DePaul University in Chicago to become a Registered Nurse. They are focused on advocating for social justice within the maternal health field and plan to continue their studies in Nurse-Midwifery. (fb)
