Just who are our cities being built for? - Much like Baltimore after the arrest and death of Freddie Gray in 2015, the 2014 murder of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri laid bare just how long the community had been experiencing racial segregation, fragmentation, poverty and police targeting. Patty Heyda charts the systematic forces that have defined Ferguson, St. Louis and the American City through an in-depth look at the contradictions undergirding city planning and design. It illuminates how tax incentives, housing codes, streets, nonprofits, philanthropy, and even landscaping often work against the betterment of resident’s lives. At its heart lies a key question: Just who are our cities being built for? Join us TOMORROW NIGHT 3/27 at 6:00 PM at the MICA Brown Center. Free parking available. AIA 1.0 LU HSW and LACES HSW available. Register at the link in our bio. #SpringLectureSeries #AIA #AIABaltimore #BaltimoreArchitectureFoundation #ASLAMaryland (fb)

Last week we had the pleasure of hearing from Despo Thoma, Director of Resilience at SCAPE, and the work she is doing at the coasts of Louisiana and Massachusetts. There is so much we can learn from cities that mirror Baltimore - geographically, socio-economically, environmentally, demographically, or culturally. Be sure to join us for our next lecture on March 27 at 6:00 PM at the MICA Brown Center: “Mapping Inequality: A Radical Atlas of Ferguson, USA” with Patty Heyda, WashU in St. Louis.
